Maureen Swann, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (O.C.A.), grew up in the west end of Toronto. She has travelled in North America, Europe and Africa, and taught at O.C.A., Toronto School of Art and Peel Board of Education.
She is now firmly rooted in her garden in Newburgh (since 1981) still gathering, growing and sorting natural and discarded objects such as old wood, metal and bones. The unusual relationship formed by groups of these objects develop into sculptural figures. These works arise from her being in her studio grouping, observing and handling these found objects until they come to a point of balance. Often the figures have a duality about them, a flip side so to speak, revealing a contrast of ideas or triggering a memory of myths and mystery.
In the artist's words, "Nature and weather do much of the carving. I try to open my eyes and recognize this process of evolution and relationships. Satisfaction comes by the sense of a spirit or energy forming in these sculptures and their ability to surprise and intrigue myself and others."
